Leopoldo Moreau warned that "democracy is at risk" after incidents in the House of Representatives.

Leopoldo Moreau warned that "democracy is at risk" after incidents in the House of Representatives.

In an interview with El Intransigente , National Representative Leopoldo Moreau addressed the incidents that occurred in the Chamber of Deputies and emphasized that, despite the scandal, progress was made with the summons to address university funding , the critical situation at Garrahan Hospital , and the defense of what he considered a fundamental pillar: democracy . "This government doesn't want to take a chainsaw to it; it wants to destroy it," he said, referring to the pediatric hospital.

According to the Union for the Homeland legislator, one of the main focal points of the conflict was the attempt to advance the formation of the commission that will address the situation of public universities. The session ended with shouting and shoving between legislators from PRO (Pro National Action Party), La Libertad Avanza (La Libertad Avanza) , and the opposition.

Moreau was emphatic in stating that "the judicial and media persecution against Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and against activists of the national and popular movement will not go unpunished." In his view, there is a concrete threat to the democratic system in Argentina. "We cannot act as if we don't know that democracy is about to be lost in Argentina," he affirmed.

The congressman blamed the judiciary and the "powers that be" for what he considered an anti-democratic advance. He also questioned the actions of the ruling party deputies, whom he accused of inciting unrest whenever sensitive issues, such as the "Libra" case, are discussed.

Despite the incidents, Moreau confirmed that a meeting was scheduled to discuss university funding and the situation at Garrahan Hospital on July 8th in a committee meeting. "We propose that it be discussed and a decision be issued that same day," he explained. According to the regulations, once a decision is issued, the issue can be brought to the committee within the corresponding timeframe.

"The goal is not just to discuss, but to ensure a resolution is reached. If you just discuss it without making a decision, you'll get nowhere," he added. Without changes, the debate could take place the week after July 9 .

The leader also took aim at those who "participated in a scam" and are seeking to prevent the investigation from moving forward. "It's a sensitive issue for many, but not for us," he said. He asserted that there is more clarity on these issues abroad than within the country.

For Leopoldo Moreau, the ruling party is avoiding the debate on university funding and the Garrahan Hospital crisis because it exposes its own shortcomings. "What happens in Congress reflects the model of the country they want to impose," he warned.

In closing, the congressman was blunt: " Javier Milei and his allies are encroaching on basic rights and guarantees. This political persecution will not go unnoticed." He warned that the combination of repression, adjustments, and judicialization of politics puts institutionality at risk.
